Brad Fenwick (Chair)
Dr. Brad Fenwick is a Professor of Pathobiology and Microbiology. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Masters of Pathology, and Ph.D. in Comparative Pathology. Dr. Fenwick has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research, published numerous papers and report, holds several patents, founded a biotechnology company, and consults globally with companies, universities, and governments. He is a Distinguished Alumni of UC Davis, Fellow with the American Council on Education, elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Jefferson Science Fellow and Senior Science Advisor to the U.S. State Department, and a National Academies of Practice Distinguished Fellow. Brad has held many senior administrative positions, including Graduate Dean, Vice President for Research, President for Intellectual Properties, Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, and Chief Scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Stefano Bertuzzi (Vice Chair)
Dr. Stefano Bertuzzi is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). ASM is one of the largest life science professional societies in the world with over 30,000 members and activities in 122 countries. Its mission is to promote and advance microbial sciences. Stefano was a senior scientific executive at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Office of the NIH Director, where he advised Dr. Elias Zerhouni on a wide range of science policy matters. He also worked with the Obama White House to develop an information system to capture benefits of scientific investments. Most recently, Stefano has led ASM’s efforts to address the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This included working directly with Ambassador Deborah Birx and the White House COVID-19 Task Force, and working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase access to diagnostic testing supplies and addressing roadblocks to coronavirus testing.
David Helfand (Treasurer)
David J. Helfand, a faculty member at Columbia University for forty-three years, served nearly half of that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy. He has mentored 22 PhD students, but most of his pedagogical efforts have been aimed at teaching science to non-science majors. He instituted the first change in Columbia's Core Curriculum in 50 years by introducing science to all first-year students. In 2005, he joined an effort to create Canada's first independent, secular university, Quest University Canada where served as President & Vice-Chancellor from 2008-2015. He also recently completed a four-year term as President of the American Astronomical Society and is currently Chair of the American Institute of Physics and of AIP Publishing. His first book is entitled, "A Survival Guide to the Misinformation Age".
Shashi Jasty (Secretary)
Shashi is Director of Global Technology & Business Development for MilliporeSigma Life Science Chemistry. She leads the definition and execution of the Innovation strategy through external partnerships aligning across internal R&D and M&A. A condensed matter physicist by training, she was the founding head of the Materials Science program and the Government initiative at Sigma-Aldrich. She serves on advisory boards of academic Nanoscience, Drug Discovery and Materials Research Centers. She is an advocate for Women in Leadership and in Science providing mentoring through formal and informal talent development programs in the company and the industry.
Alan Andreasen
Alan R. Andreasen is Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the McDonough School of Business of Georgetown University. Authoring numerous books and monographs, he is a world leader in the application of marketing to nonprofit organizations, social marketing, and the market problems of disadvantaged consumers. Dr. Andreasen has worked with the American Cancer Society, AARP, the USAID, American Red Cross, United Way of America, National Endowment for the Arts, National Cancer Institute, Habitat for Humanity International, and PBS. He is the winner of the 2007 Richard W. Pollay Prize for Intellectual Excellence in Research on Marketing in the Public Interest and, in 2008, received the first lifetime achievement award of the Marketing and Society Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association.
Naniette Coleman
Naniette H. Coleman is a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work sits at the intersection of the sociology of culture and organizations and focuses on cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy in the US context. Specifically, Naniette’s research examines how organizations assess risk, make decisions, and respond to data breaches and organizational compliance with state, federal, and international privacy laws. Naniette holds a Master of Public Administration with a specialization in Democracy, Politics, and Institutions from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and both an M.A. in Economics and a B.A. in Communication from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. A non-traditional student, Naniette’s prior professional experience includes local, state, and federal service, as well as work for two international organizations, and two universities. She is also a former college athlete (soccer) and a longtime patron of the arts.
Benjamin Corb
Benjamin Corb brings to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology more than a decade of experience in building partnerships between the federal government and the private sector to utilize scientific advancement to improve the quality of life and well-being of Americans. Corb has made a career in science policy and advocacy. In addition to his role at the ASBMB and on the ScienceCounts board, Corb serves as the President-elect of the Coalition for Health Funding, and Chair of NDD United.
Tessa Hill
Dr. Hill is the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs in Public Scholarship & Engagement at UC Davis. She is also a Professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and Bodega Marine Laboratory. Tessa graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College (1999) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from UC Santa Barbara (2004). She is part of the Bodega Ocean Acidification Research (BOAR) group at Bodega Marine Laboratory, which aims to understand the impact of ocean acidification on marine species and West Coast communities. Tessa leads an industry-academic partnership to understand the consequences of ocean acidification on shellfish farmers on the Northern California coast, and a partnership with the UC Davis CalTeach MAST program to develop ocean themed curriculum for middle schoolers. Tessa is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE).
Rush Holt
Rush D. Holt, CEO, Emeritus, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), headed the AAAS from 2015 to 2019. Over his career, Dr. Holt has held positions as a teacher, scientist, administrator, and policymaker. Dr. Holt was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, a Department of Energy national lab. He has served on the faculty of Swarthmore College, where he taught courses in physics and in public policy. Serving 16 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Holt represented New Jersey's 12th Congressional District. While on Capitol Hill, Dr. Holt established a long track record of advocacy for federal investment in research and development, science education, and innovation.
Margaret Leinen
Dr. Margaret Leinen is UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the School of Marine Sciences. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology who is a Fellow of AAAS and the Geological Society of America. She served for 7 years as the assistant director for Geosciences of the National Science Foundation. She has served as the President of the American Geophysical Union and the Chair of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere Section of AAAS, and was appointed as US Department of State Science Envoy by both the Obama and Trump Administrations Dr. Leinen joined Scripps Oceanography in October 2013. She has extensive national and international experience in ocean science, global climate and environmental issues, federal research administration, and non-profit startups. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology.
Alan Leshner
Alan I. Leshner is Chief Executive Officer, Emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serving as CEO from December 2001 through February 2015. Before joining AAAS, Dr. Leshner was Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, Deputy Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and in several roles at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Leshner is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Public Administration. He is a member the governing Council of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. He served two terms on the National Science Board, appointed first by President Bush and then reappointed by President Obama. Dr. Leshner has received many honors and awards, including the Walsh McDermott Medal from the National Academy of Medicine.
Anne Matsuura
Dr. Anne Matsuura is the Director of Quantum and Molecular Technologies at Intel Labs. She has worked in scientific posts in academia, industry, government and non-profit organizations. Previously, she held positions as the Chief Scientist of the Optical Society (OSA) and the Chief Executive of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF). She has been a strategic investor in technology start-ups at In-Q-Tel and a funder of basic science at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and has experience as a science policymaker as a special assistant to the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Science. Anne was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to Japan and is an elected fellow of the OSA. She received her Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University.
Donna Nelson
Dr. Nelson is professor of chemistry at Oklahoma University and past president of the American Chemical Society. Besides her numerous research contributions in the areas of nanoscience and organic chemistry, she has also been a pivotal figure in several efforts to enhance chemical education and scientific workforce development. Her scientific workforce surveys of faculty race/ethnicity, gender, and rank in science and engineering at research universities revealed that women and minorities are much less represented among professors than degree recipients. She also advises television programs, such as Breaking Bad, to further the universal goal of presenting accurate science to TV audiences.

Dr. Christopher Volpe is the executive director and a founding board member of ScienceCounts. With an academic background in physical chemistry and two decades of private sector experience in marketing and branding, Dr. Volpe is a leading voice in developing data-driven social marketing strategies to foster stronger connections between the scientific community and the general public. Previously, he was the president and co-founder of Prismatic Laser Programs LLC, the nation’s leading provider of STEM-based assembly programs to elementary and middle schools. In his free time, Dr. Volpe is a demonstration pilot of various types of historically significant WW2 aircraft.
Michael Lubell
Senior Advisor
Dr. Michael S. Lubell is the Mark W. Zemansky Professor of Physics at the City College of the City University of New York (CCNY) and former Director of Public Affairs of The American Physical Society (APS). He is a pioneer of science advocacy in Washington and is regarded as one of its most effective practitioners. He has served on many scientific advisory committees inside and outside government. Dr. Lubell has also been a newspaper columnist for more than 25 years and a guest column for Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper that reaches more than 20,000 readers. He has been active in local, state and national politics for more than four decades and has served as an adviser to members of Congress and state and national officials.

Zemansky Professor of Physics at the City College of the City University of New York (CCNY) and former Director of Public Affairs of The American Physical Society (APS). He is a pioneer of science advocacy in Washington and is regarded as one of its most effective practitioners. He has served on many scientific advisory committees inside and outside government. Dr. Lubell has also been a newspaper columnist for more than 25 years and a guest column for Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper that reaches more than 20,000 readers. He has been active in local, state and national politics for more than four decades and has served as an adviser to members of Congress and state and national officials.

Brad Fenwick (Chair)
Dr. Brad Fenwick is a Professor of Pathobiology and Microbiology. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Masters of Pathology, and Ph.D. in Comparative Pathology. Dr. Fenwick has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research, published numerous papers and report, holds several patents, founded a biotechnology company, and consults globally with companies, universities, and governments. He is a Distinguished Alumni of UC Davis, Fellow with the American Council on Education, elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Jefferson Science Fellow and Senior Science Advisor to the U.S. State Department, and a National Academies of Practice Distinguished Fellow. Brad has held many senior administrative positions, including Graduate Dean, Vice President for Research, President for Intellectual Properties, Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, and Chief Scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Stefano Bertuzzi (Vice Chair)
Dr. Stefano Bertuzzi is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). ASM is one of the largest life science professional societies in the world with over 30,000 members and activities in 122 countries. Its mission is to promote and advance microbial sciences. Stefano was a senior scientific executive at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Office of the NIH Director, where he advised Dr. Elias Zerhouni on a wide range of science policy matters. He also worked with the Obama White House to develop an information system to capture benefits of scientific investments. Most recently, Stefano has led ASM’s efforts to address the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This included working directly with Ambassador Deborah Birx and the White House COVID-19 Task Force, and working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase access to diagnostic testing supplies and addressing roadblocks to coronavirus testing.
David Helfand (Treasurer)
David J. Helfand, a faculty member at Columbia University for forty-three years, served nearly half of that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy. He has mentored 22 PhD students, but most of his pedagogical efforts have been aimed at teaching science to non-science majors. He instituted the first change in Columbia's Core Curriculum in 50 years by introducing science to all first-year students. In 2005, he joined an effort to create Canada's first independent, secular university, Quest University Canada where served as President & Vice-Chancellor from 2008-2015. He also recently completed a four-year term as President of the American Astronomical Society and is currently Chair of the American Institute of Physics and of AIP Publishing. His first book is entitled, "A Survival Guide to the Misinformation Age".
Shashi Jasty (Secretary)
Shashi is Director of Global Technology & Business Development for MilliporeSigma Life Science Chemistry. She leads the definition and execution of the Innovation strategy through external partnerships aligning across internal R&D and M&A. A condensed matter physicist by training, she was the founding head of the Materials Science program and the Government initiative at Sigma-Aldrich. She serves on advisory boards of academic Nanoscience, Drug Discovery and Materials Research Centers. She is an advocate for Women in Leadership and in Science providing mentoring through formal and informal talent development programs in the company and the industry.
Alan Andreasen
Alan R. Andreasen is Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the McDonough School of Business of Georgetown University. Authoring numerous books and monographs, he is a world leader in the application of marketing to nonprofit organizations, social marketing, and the market problems of disadvantaged consumers. Dr. Andreasen has worked with the American Cancer Society, AARP, the USAID, American Red Cross, United Way of America, National Endowment for the Arts, National Cancer Institute, Habitat for Humanity International, and PBS. He is the winner of the 2007 Richard W. Pollay Prize for Intellectual Excellence in Research on Marketing in the Public Interest and, in 2008, received the first lifetime achievement award of the Marketing and Society Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association.
Naniette Coleman
Naniette H. Coleman is a PhD candidate in the Sociology Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work sits at the intersection of the sociology of culture and organizations and focuses on cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy in the US context. Specifically, Naniette’s research examines how organizations assess risk, make decisions, and respond to data breaches and organizational compliance with state, federal, and international privacy laws. Naniette holds a Master of Public Administration with a specialization in Democracy, Politics, and Institutions from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and both an M.A. in Economics and a B.A. in Communication from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. A non-traditional student, Naniette’s prior professional experience includes local, state, and federal service, as well as work for two international organizations, and two universities. She is also a former college athlete (soccer) and a longtime patron of the arts.
Benjamin Corb
Benjamin Corb brings to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology more than a decade of experience in building partnerships between the federal government and the private sector to utilize scientific advancement to improve the quality of life and well-being of Americans. Corb has made a career in science policy and advocacy. In addition to his role at the ASBMB and on the ScienceCounts board, Corb serves as the President-elect of the Coalition for Health Funding, and Chair of NDD United.
Tessa Hill
Dr. Hill is the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs in Public Scholarship & Engagement at UC Davis. She is also a Professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and Bodega Marine Laboratory. Tessa graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College (1999) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from UC Santa Barbara (2004). She is part of the Bodega Ocean Acidification Research (BOAR) group at Bodega Marine Laboratory, which aims to understand the impact of ocean acidification on marine species and West Coast communities. Tessa leads an industry-academic partnership to understand the consequences of ocean acidification on shellfish farmers on the Northern California coast, and a partnership with the UC Davis CalTeach MAST program to develop ocean themed curriculum for middle schoolers. Tessa is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE).
Rush Holt
Rush D. Holt, CEO, Emeritus, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), headed the AAAS from 2015 to 2019. Over his career, Dr. Holt has held positions as a teacher, scientist, administrator, and policymaker. Dr. Holt was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, a Department of Energy national lab. He has served on the faculty of Swarthmore College, where he taught courses in physics and in public policy. Serving 16 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Holt represented New Jersey's 12th Congressional District. While on Capitol Hill, Dr. Holt established a long track record of advocacy for federal investment in research and development, science education, and innovation.
Margaret Leinen
Dr. Margaret Leinen is UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the School of Marine Sciences. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology who is a Fellow of AAAS and the Geological Society of America. She served for 7 years as the assistant director for Geosciences of the National Science Foundation. She has served as the President of the American Geophysical Union and the Chair of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere Section of AAAS, and was appointed as US Department of State Science Envoy by both the Obama and Trump Administrations Dr. Leinen joined Scripps Oceanography in October 2013. She has extensive national and international experience in ocean science, global climate and environmental issues, federal research administration, and non-profit startups. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology.
Alan Leshner
Alan I. Leshner is Chief Executive Officer, Emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serving as CEO from December 2001 through February 2015. Before joining AAAS, Dr. Leshner was Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, Deputy Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and in several roles at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Leshner is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Public Administration. He is a member the governing Council of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. He served two terms on the National Science Board, appointed first by President Bush and then reappointed by President Obama. Dr. Leshner has received many honors and awards, including the Walsh McDermott Medal from the National Academy of Medicine.
Anne Matsuura
Dr. Anne Matsuura is the Director of Quantum and Molecular Technologies at Intel Labs. She has worked in scientific posts in academia, industry, government and non-profit organizations. Previously, she held positions as the Chief Scientist of the Optical Society (OSA) and the Chief Executive of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF). She has been a strategic investor in technology start-ups at In-Q-Tel and a funder of basic science at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and has experience as a science policymaker as a special assistant to the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Science. Anne was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to Japan and is an elected fellow of the OSA. She received her Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University.
Donna Nelson
Dr. Nelson is professor of chemistry at Oklahoma University and past president of the American Chemical Society. Besides her numerous research contributions in the areas of nanoscience and organic chemistry, she has also been a pivotal figure in several efforts to enhance chemical education and scientific workforce development. Her scientific workforce surveys of faculty race/ethnicity, gender, and rank in science and engineering at research universities revealed that women and minorities are much less represented among professors than degree recipients. She also advises television programs, such as Breaking Bad, to further the universal goal of presenting accurate science to TV audiences.
