BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Stefano Bertuzzi (Chair)

Dr. Stefano Bertuzzi is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), one of the largest life sciences professional societies in the world. Bertuzzi has wide experience in science policy and scholarly publishing, and was a senior scientific executive at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Office of the NIH Director, where he advised the NIH Director on a wide range of science policy matters. Recently, Bertuzzi has led ASM's efforts to address the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This included working directly with the White House COVID-19 Task Force, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase access to diagnostic testing supplies and addressing roadblocks to coronavirus testing. Bertuzzi received a Master's degree in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biotechnology from the Catholic University in Italy.

Shashi Jasty (Vice Chair)

Shashi is the Global Head of Innovation for MilliporeSigma Life Science Chemistry. She leads the definition and execution of the Innovation strategy through internal R&D and external partnerships aligning across multiple functions and M&A. A condensed matter physicist by training, she was the founding head of the Materials Science program and the Government initiative at Sigma-Aldrich and most recently the head for our external partnership driven innovation. She serves on advisory boards of academic Nanoscience, Drug Discovery and Materials Research Centers. She is an advocate for Women in Leadership and in Science providing mentoring through formal and informal talent development programs in the company and the industry.

David Helfand (Treasurer)

David J. Helfand, a faculty member at Columbia University in his fifth decade on the faculty, served nearly half of that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy. He has mentored 22 PhD students, but most of his pedagogical efforts have been aimed at teaching science to non-science majors. He instituted the first change in Columbia's Core Curriculum in 50 years by introducing science to all first-year students. In 2005, he joined an effort to create Canada's first independent, secular university, Quest University Canada where served as President & Vice-Chancellor from 2008-2015. He also recently completed a four-year term as President of the American Astronomical Society and is currently Chair of the American Institute of Physics and of AIP Publishing. His first book is entitled, "A Survival Guide to the Misinformation Age".

Anne Matsuura (Secretary)

Dr. Anne Matsuura is the Director of Quantum and Molecular Technologies at Intel Labs. She has worked in scientific posts in academia, industry, government and non-profit organizations. Previously, she held positions as the Chief Scientist of the Optical Society (OSA) and the Chief Executive of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF). She has been a strategic investor in technology start-ups at In-Q-Tel and a funder of basic science at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and has experience as a science policymaker as a special assistant to the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Science. Anne was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to Japan and is an elected fellow of the OSA. She received her Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University.

Alan Andreasen

Alan R. Andreasen is Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the McDonough School of Business of Georgetown University. Authoring numerous books and monographs, he is a world leader in the application of marketing to nonprofit organizations, social marketing, and the market problems of disadvantaged consumers. Dr. Andreasen has worked with the American Cancer Society, AARP, the USAID, American Red Cross, United Way of America, National Endowment for the Arts, National Cancer Institute, Habitat for Humanity International, and PBS. He is the winner of the 2007 Richard W. Pollay Prize for Intellectual Excellence in Research on Marketing in the Public Interest and, in 2008, received the first lifetime achievement award of the Marketing and Society Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association.

Naniette Coleman

Naniette H. Coleman is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of California Berkeley and UC-National Laboratory Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Her work sits at the intersection of the sociology of culture and organizations and focuses on cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy, examining how organizations assess risk, decisions, and respond to data breaches and organizational compliance with privacy laws.   Naniette holds a M.P.A with a specialization in Democracy, Politics, and Institutions from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, an M.A. in Economics and a B.A. in Communication from the University at Buffalo-SUNY. A non-traditional student, Naniette’s prior professional experience spans both government and academia.   Naniette is the recipient of numerous honors including the K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award from the American Association of Colleges and Universities, a Presidential Management Fellowship, President's Life-time Volunteer Service Award, Berkeley Chancellor’s Award for Public Service, and SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.

Benjamin Corb

Ben Corb serves as a Senior Vice President for Health Advocacy at Edelman Public Relations, where he offers strategic consultation on communications strategy, coalition building and building the case for advocacy support to clients in the health sector. Prior to joining Edelman, Ben built a successful career in the science advocacy space. He served as the public affairs director to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology where he grew a small department into a leading voice in Washington among life sciences societies. He’s made a career supporting science – and connecting those who do the science to those who benefit from it. He’s the former President of the Coalition for Health Funding and former Co-Chair of NDD United.

Tessa Hill

Dr. Hill is the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs in Public Scholarship & Engagement at UC Davis. She is also a Professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and Bodega Marine Laboratory. Tessa graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College (1999) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from UC Santa Barbara (2004). She is part of the Bodega Ocean Acidification Research (BOAR) group at Bodega Marine Laboratory, which aims to understand the impact of ocean acidification on marine species and West Coast communities. Tessa leads an industry-academic partnership to understand the consequences of ocean acidification on shellfish farmers on the Northern California coast, and a partnership with the UC Davis CalTeach MAST program to develop ocean themed curriculum for middle schoolers. Tessa is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE).

Rush Holt

Rush D. Holt is currently the Director’s Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. He was the CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) from 2015 to 2019. Over his career, Dr. Holt has held positions as a teacher, scientist, administrator, and policymaker. Dr. Holt was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, a Department of Energy national lab. He has served on the faculty of Swarthmore College, where he taught courses in physics and in public policy. Serving 16 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Holt represented New Jersey's 12th Congressional District. While on Capitol Hill, Dr. Holt established a long track record of advocacy for federal investment in research and development, science education, and innovation.

Margaret Leinen

Dr. Margaret Leinen is UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the School of Marine Sciences. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology who is a Fellow of AAAS and the Geological Society of America. She served for 7 years as the assistant director for Geosciences of the National Science Foundation. She has served as the President of the American Geophysical Union and the Chair of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere Section of AAAS, and was appointed as US Department of State Science Envoy by both the Obama and Trump Administrations Dr. Leinen joined Scripps Oceanography in October 2013.  She has extensive national and international experience in ocean science, global climate and environmental issues, federal research administration, and non-profit startups. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology.

Alan Leshner

Alan I. Leshner is Chief Executive Officer, Emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serving as CEO from December 2001 through February 2015. Before joining AAAS, Dr. Leshner was Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, Deputy Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and in several roles at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Leshner is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Public Administration. He is a member the governing Council of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. He served two terms on the National Science Board, appointed first by President Bush and then reappointed by President Obama. Dr. Leshner has received many honors and awards, including the Walsh McDermott Medal from the National Academy of Medicine.

Donna Nelson

Dr. Nelson is professor of chemistry at Oklahoma University and past president of the American Chemical Society.  Besides her numerous research contributions in the areas of nanoscience and organic chemistry, she has also been a pivotal figure in several efforts to enhance chemical education and scientific workforce development. Her scientific workforce surveys of faculty race/ethnicity, gender, and rank in science and engineering at research universities revealed that women and minorities are much less represented among professors than degree recipients. She also advises television programs, such as Breaking Bad, to further the universal goal of presenting accurate science to TV audiences.  

Allen Segal

Allen Segal serves as Chief Advocacy Officer for the American Society for Microbiology. Working with the Society’s Public and Scientific Affairs Committee, he is responsible for programing focused on policy development, member engagement, and policymaker outreach. Allen joined ASM from the Society for Neuroscience, where he served as Senior Director, Policy and Member programs. There he oversaw departments responsible for the bulk of SfN’s programmatic functions, including advocacy and animals in research policies as well as the development of a scientific training program. Prior to joining SfN, Allen served as the Director of Federal Affairs for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association. He also developed expertise in the federal budget and appropriations process working with the American Cancer Society. Allen holds a Juris Doctor from the American University, Washington College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in American Government from Clark University in Worcester, MA.

Lana Skirboll

Dr. Skirboll is Vice President of Science Policy at Sanofi, where she works on issues of importance to innovation, including biosimilars, data sharing/transparency, big data/ real world evidence, antimicrobial resistance, informed consent, human samples, expanded access, biomarkers, public-private partnerships, fetal tissue and diversity in clinical trials and science education. She formerly served as Director of Science Policy at the NIH where she worked with the NIH Director to design and implement the “Roadmap for Medical Research.” Dr. Skirboll also worked with the Zerhouni Group to conduct a review of the French Biomedical Research enterprise for President Sarkozy and participated in the review of the Canadian Institutes of Health. Dr. Skirboll is trained in Pharmacology and Neuroscience. She completed her Ph.D. at Georgetown Medical School, followed by post-doctoral work and research positions at Yale, the Karolinska Institute, and NIMH. She is the author of more than 70 peer reviewed scientific publications.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Stefano Bertuzzi (Chair)

Dr. Stefano Bertuzzi is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), one of the largest life sciences professional societies in the world. Bertuzzi has wide experience in science policy and scholarly publishing, and was a senior scientific executive at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Office of the NIH Director, where he advised the NIH Director on a wide range of science policy matters. Recently, Bertuzzi has led ASM's efforts to address the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This included working directly with the White House COVID-19 Task Force, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase access to diagnostic testing supplies and addressing roadblocks to coronavirus testing. Bertuzzi received a Master's degree in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biotechnology from the Catholic University in Italy.

Shashi Jasty (Vice Chair)

Shashi is the Global Head of Innovation for MilliporeSigma Life Science Chemistry. She leads the definition and execution of the Innovation strategy through internal R&D and external partnerships aligning across multiple functions and M&A. A condensed matter physicist by training, she was the founding head of the Materials Science program and the Government initiative at Sigma-Aldrich and most recently the head for our external partnership driven innovation. She serves on advisory boards of academic Nanoscience, Drug Discovery and Materials Research Centers. She is an advocate for Women in Leadership and in Science providing mentoring through formal and informal talent development programs in the company and the industry.

David Helfand (Treasurer)

David J. Helfand, a faculty member at Columbia University in his fifth decade on the faculty, served nearly half of that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy. He has mentored 22 PhD students, but most of his pedagogical efforts have been aimed at teaching science to non-science majors. He instituted the first change in Columbia's Core Curriculum in 50 years by introducing science to all first-year students. In 2005, he joined an effort to create Canada's first independent, secular university, Quest University Canada where served as President & Vice-Chancellor from 2008-2015. He also recently completed a four-year term as President of the American Astronomical Society and is currently Chair of the American Institute of Physics and of AIP Publishing. His first book is entitled, "A Survival Guide to the Misinformation Age".

Anne Matsuura (Secretary)

Dr. Anne Matsuura is the Director of Quantum and Molecular Technologies at Intel Labs. She has worked in scientific posts in academia, industry, government and non-profit organizations. Previously, she held positions as the Chief Scientist of the Optical Society (OSA) and the Chief Executive of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF). She has been a strategic investor in technology start-ups at In-Q-Tel and a funder of basic science at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and has experience as a science policymaker as a special assistant to the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Science. Anne was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to Japan and is an elected fellow of the OSA. She received her Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University.

Alan Andreasen

Alan R. Andreasen is Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the McDonough School of Business of Georgetown University. Authoring numerous books and monographs, he is a world leader in the application of marketing to nonprofit organizations, social marketing, and the market problems of disadvantaged consumers. Dr. Andreasen has worked with the American Cancer Society, AARP, the USAID, American Red Cross, United Way of America, National Endowment for the Arts, National Cancer Institute, Habitat for Humanity International, and PBS. He is the winner of the 2007 Richard W. Pollay Prize for Intellectual Excellence in Research on Marketing in the Public Interest and, in 2008, received the first lifetime achievement award of the Marketing and Society Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association.

Naniette Coleman

Naniette H. Coleman is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of California Berkeley and UC-National Laboratory Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Her work sits at the intersection of the sociology of culture and organizations and focuses on cybersecurity, surveillance, and privacy, examining how organizations assess risk, decisions, and respond to data breaches and organizational compliance with privacy laws.   Naniette holds a M.P.A with a specialization in Democracy, Politics, and Institutions from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, an M.A. in Economics and a B.A. in Communication from the University at Buffalo-SUNY. A non-traditional student, Naniette’s prior professional experience spans both government and academia.   Naniette is the recipient of numerous honors including the K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award from the American Association of Colleges and Universities, a Presidential Management Fellowship, President's Life-time Volunteer Service Award, Berkeley Chancellor’s Award for Public Service, and SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.

Benjamin Corb

Ben Corb serves as a Senior Vice President for Health Advocacy at Edelman Public Relations, where he offers strategic consultation on communications strategy, coalition building and building the case for advocacy support to clients in the health sector. Prior to joining Edelman, Ben built a successful career in the science advocacy space. He served as the public affairs director to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology where he grew a small department into a leading voice in Washington among life sciences societies. He’s made a career supporting science – and connecting those who do the science to those who benefit from it. He’s the former President of the Coalition for Health Funding and former Co-Chair of NDD United.

Tessa Hill

Dr. Hill is the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs in Public Scholarship & Engagement at UC Davis. She is also a Professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and Bodega Marine Laboratory. Tessa graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College (1999) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from UC Santa Barbara (2004). She is part of the Bodega Ocean Acidification Research (BOAR) group at Bodega Marine Laboratory, which aims to understand the impact of ocean acidification on marine species and West Coast communities. Tessa leads an industry-academic partnership to understand the consequences of ocean acidification on shellfish farmers on the Northern California coast, and a partnership with the UC Davis CalTeach MAST program to develop ocean themed curriculum for middle schoolers. Tessa is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE).

Rush Holt

Rush D. Holt is currently the Director’s Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. He was the CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) from 2015 to 2019. Over his career, Dr. Holt has held positions as a teacher, scientist, administrator, and policymaker. Dr. Holt was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, a Department of Energy national lab. He has served on the faculty of Swarthmore College, where he taught courses in physics and in public policy. Serving 16 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Holt represented New Jersey's 12th Congressional District. While on Capitol Hill, Dr. Holt established a long track record of advocacy for federal investment in research and development, science education, and innovation.

Margaret Leinen

Dr. Margaret Leinen is UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the School of Marine Sciences. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology who is a Fellow of AAAS and the Geological Society of America. She served for 7 years as the assistant director for Geosciences of the National Science Foundation. She has served as the President of the American Geophysical Union and the Chair of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere Section of AAAS, and was appointed as US Department of State Science Envoy by both the Obama and Trump Administrations Dr. Leinen joined Scripps Oceanography in October 2013.  She has extensive national and international experience in ocean science, global climate and environmental issues, federal research administration, and non-profit startups. She is a researcher in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology.

Alan Leshner

Alan I. Leshner is Chief Executive Officer, Emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serving as CEO from December 2001 through February 2015. Before joining AAAS, Dr. Leshner was Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, Deputy Director and Acting Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and in several roles at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Leshner is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Public Administration. He is a member the governing Council of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. He served two terms on the National Science Board, appointed first by President Bush and then reappointed by President Obama. Dr. Leshner has received many honors and awards, including the Walsh McDermott Medal from the National Academy of Medicine.

Donna Nelson

Dr. Nelson is professor of chemistry at Oklahoma University and past president of the American Chemical Society.  Besides her numerous research contributions in the areas of nanoscience and organic chemistry, she has also been a pivotal figure in several efforts to enhance chemical education and scientific workforce development. Her scientific workforce surveys of faculty race/ethnicity, gender, and rank in science and engineering at research universities revealed that women and minorities are much less represented among professors than degree recipients. She also advises television programs, such as Breaking Bad, to further the universal goal of presenting accurate science to TV audiences.  

Allen Segal

Allen Segal serves as Chief Advocacy Officer for the American Society for Microbiology. Working with the Society’s Public and Scientific Affairs Committee, he is responsible for programing focused on policy development, member engagement, and policymaker outreach. Allen joined ASM from the Society for Neuroscience, where he served as Senior Director, Policy and Member programs. There he oversaw departments responsible for the bulk of SfN’s programmatic functions, including advocacy and animals in research policies as well as the development of a scientific training program. Prior to joining SfN, Allen served as the Director of Federal Affairs for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association. He also developed expertise in the federal budget and appropriations process working with the American Cancer Society. Allen holds a Juris Doctor from the American University, Washington College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in American Government from Clark University in Worcester, MA.

Lana Skirboll

Dr. Skirboll is Vice President of Science Policy at Sanofi, where she works on issues of importance to innovation, including biosimilars, data sharing/transparency, big data/ real world evidence, antimicrobial resistance, informed consent, human samples, expanded access, biomarkers, public-private partnerships, fetal tissue and diversity in clinical trials and science education. She formerly served as Director of Science Policy at the NIH where she worked with the NIH Director to design and implement the “Roadmap for Medical Research.” Dr. Skirboll also worked with the Zerhouni Group to conduct a review of the French Biomedical Research enterprise for President Sarkozy and participated in the review of the Canadian Institutes of Health. Dr. Skirboll is trained in Pharmacology and Neuroscience. She completed her Ph.D. at Georgetown Medical School, followed by post-doctoral work and research positions at Yale, the Karolinska Institute, and NIMH. She is the author of more than 70 peer reviewed scientific publications.
